Thibaut Devigne Boom bap like in the good ol' days , but with a modern sound to it. It is very nice, full of energy album, with excellent instrumentals all the way. Favorite track: Mere Kash.

AltBraKz I’ve been a fan of Fanu for a very long time and just never got around to checking out FatGyver. After this album dropped, I went and checked it out and immediately regretted not listening sooner. I love the lofi vibes, the drum work is impeccable, and, most importantly, cookie season. Favorite track: Mere Kash.

G Lampa The definition of “phat”, and exhibit A in the case for why sample-based hip-hop is the richest creative soil in music. A masterpiece. Favorite track: Eeron Skittikampe.

about

In a world where few things are certain, the importance of some staples is emphasized – and if there is one musical recipe that will never go out of demand, it is instrumental, sample-laden hip hop.

Adventures In Imperfection by FatGyver (aka Fanu for bass music / D&B) explores the borderlands of hip hop and funk, painting for the listener mental images of smokey urban landscapes and dimly-lit nocturnal city streets.

However, while you couldn’t be blamed for thinking this is US East Coast music, FatGyver’s stuff comes from Finland – not the most obvious location for funky-jazzy hip hop. Then again, it’s there that producers stay warm in their studios, basking in the warmth produced by old samplers and mixing desks, watching films and listening to records indoors to stay safe from polar bears (occasionally fending them off with their MPCs), sampling everything that moves.

FatGyver’s productions exude funk and indie film samples, and the bittersweet, melancholic yet hopeful atmosphere that is also familiar to the listeners of Fanu’s discography is ever present.
Have Steve Carell aka Michael Scott or Kevin from The Office been sampled for hip hop before? Probably not, but now you’ve heard it. Kashmere Stage Band drumloop reaches new levels of phatness, while other songs exhibit breaks not necessarily heard before – and you won’t hear many actually familiar samples on the album in general, which is somewhat true of Fanu ethos as well.

Sample-based music can still sound fresh while still staying true to its 30-year-old roots.
Put some of this in your pipe and smoke it to reach new levels of relaxation. The more low-fidelity, warm side of things is always welcome in the world of often overproduced and honed music.
For the fans of DJ Krush, Pete Rock, DJ Premier, Luke Vibert, Marco Polo, Damu The Fudgemunk etc.
